"Machete" Premiere - Austin, Texas

The Austin premiere of "Machete" 9/2/10 was sold out!  The film did over $14M over the Labor Day weekend, putting it at #2 for feature films released nationally over the 4-day weekend (hope you got 4 days) - Source: http://www.the-numbers.com/.

I have had a chance to review the feature two other times since the premiere. I liken it to "Eating a bag of Skittles at one time.  You know it isn't good for you, but you can't help it.  It was that good."

The reviews are all over the board from ecstatic to disappointed (you can't make everybody happy).  Cinema lovers and afficionados will laud the feature for its plausible plots, timeliness of the subject matter (although by accident - the film has been in the making for over 16 years), music, and a male-focused action-driven story line.  Not being sexist here, but my wife has normally refused to see films like this with me, until now.

"Machete gets the girls" too! For the most part, my guess is that the ladies will want to see what all the fuss is about.  The film features Lindsay Lohan, Jessica Alba, Michelle Rodriguez, and lots more. So, is it a guy flick or a chick flick?

My wife and I, have a date this afternoon to catch a matinee in Houston, Texas.  She couldn't resist my description of the premiere and the film thus far. So, she is throwing caution to the wind and entering into theatre to experience a "film for the history books".  This is a film you want to see in the theatre, watching it on DVD won't be the same.

I was suprised to see that Danny Trejo, Michelle Rodriguez, Electra Avellan, Jeff Fahey attend the premier.  The film opened in Venice, Italy the night before.  Of course the Director Robert Rodriguez and Co-writer, Alvaro Rodriguez along with other cast and crew were at the premiere signing autographs and mingling with the fans of Trouble Makers Studios and the actors.

There is some controversy over the film and the jury is out as to whether it will qualify for the Texas Film Commission tax rebate.  I think it should, this film could only be made in Texas.

Vertical and Horizontal Networking and Marketing

By Andy Valadez, StealthMarketer

In my last post, I mentioned that I was the guest speaker at the Northwest Young Professionals Organization hosted by the Northwest Chamber of Commerce (last month). I enjoy speaking to entrepreneurs, avid networkers and motivated sales professionals.

I have read many articles and heard people talk about networking and social media in the past, but have rarely heard Strategic Marketers comment on the subject.

What's the difference?

Well, marketers think strategically and very different.

When networking or marketing (it's all marketing to me), we have to think vertically and horizontally about the opportunities we have that impact our business interests. Whether marketing to one person or to thousands or even millions, the strategies and techniques will vary.

For example, in my talk, I mentioned that many networkers need to get rid of their business cards.

You should have heard the gasps. I confirmed, "Yes a marketer is advising that you get rid of your business cards."

I've written countless articles of the need for business people and other marketers to put more thought into the design and heft of their cards. Most cards are not that well done. So, I say get rid of them.

In fact, I dare you to get rid of them. Why? For many, the business card is getting in the way of making a personal connection. The traditional business card is a barrier. I am going to write more about this in my next article. For now, just know that we can use echnology to "Bump" on our iPhone or Droid, send in instant message, text or e-mail right then and there, program the information into our phones by hand, research our contacts on LinkedIn or Facebook.

The new business climate requires that we be more intentional about the connections we make. Getting rid of your business cards makes us be more focused on the people we meet.

Business cards and the delivery of them is too passive. Enough of that rant for now. Are they in the trash yet? I'll wait.

Vertical and Horizontal Networking and Marketing means thinking very differently to how one connects with various customers, new acquaintances, strategic alliance partners, friends and/or family.

This approach requires that we dissect the various ways that we can make an important influence partner to aid future success for both parties.

So, what is “Horizontal and Vertical Networking (Marketing)?”
• Redefine where and how networking takes place, time and location does matter
• Do some market research, where should you be networking? Who do you need to know – go
vertical, go horizontal and go on a tangent
• Think long-term, it may take years to make a connection –go in a tangent
• Don’t worry about a reputation you don’t have (take risks) – go off
• An illustration: Want someone to remember you? Offer them $100 if they remember you a
year from now. Find the value proposition. – get off the beaten path, try something new
• Business cards don’t matter - what you still have them?
• Who you know matters - value your relationships and they will value you
• Do you have a posse? Having a posse matters - chart a course with your team
• Kill the word “busy” (no one cares) – we are all busy, so what?
• Return your calls and reply to your e-mails demand the same from your team
• Treat all of contacts with respect
• Be prepared to lead and sometimes follow
• Get some ”gray-hairs” in your circle
• Be selective, but don’t pre-judge
• Avoid angry people

Action:
• Make a list of 5 key people you need to know to expand your business interests
• Find 7 to 12 people to put on your networking team (conference once a week if not every day)
• Before you meet with anyone, find the business reason (this builds value).
• Build your brand. Make people want to call you, how do you do that? Let your team know
what you are looking for.

Marketing Influence and Being Sociable

Article submssion by Andy Valadez/StealthMarketer

Everyone markets something. I enjoy reading posts from my Twitter, Facebook, Plaxo, LinkedIN friends, and fellow bloggers. I try not to be a "lurker," but due to the shear volume of posts it is impossible to reply, "like" or RT all updates. I do enjoy skimming and that is more a less a best practice by some of the best. It's a great way to get a pulse of the emotional climate of the "socialrati" (a word I made up a while back).

If the "new currency" is influence (not really new) then how is that "influence" being marketed? Are you using your influence effectively to impact lives and change the course of business interests for others, positively? How do you process your requests for help or assistance? Do you process or honor your requests well?

A business friend was surprised to hear me say that "Social Media" isn't Marketing, It is Public Relations, a tactical component of Marketing and it is a Market Research loop. Marketers should love feedback from their clients, customers and be prepared to sift through relevant feedback that affects the brand. Social media enables marketers the ability to engage with segments of their market in truly unique ways.

Back to influence. It has been said that "Leadership is using one's influence." So, Market Leadership is about using your company's influence in the marketplace. Here are a few tips that may help.

Strategic Marketes practice and teach their partners, clients and friends the following:

  • Use mulitple ways to engage your influence leaders (i.e., phone calls, e-mails, in-person meetings, IMs, RT, thoughtful replies to posts, creative content to position your own personality into the equation, etc). Old school is still the new school.

  • Be friendly and responsive to all requests (don't blow people off, get back to them somehow and someway - only applies to direct requests and personal communiques). If you can't do it, then get someone on your team help out.

  • Use your influence. Use it or lose it. There are simple things we can do everyday that helps to bring value to others. Don't worry too much about a reputation you may not have (we really aren't that important when it gets down to it, one of us could die today). Helping others is a great reputation to have.

  • Make mistakes. Experiment. That is really how we learn.

  • Have fun. Don't take yourself too seriously.

  • Take a business friend to lunch. The proper ettiquette is that if you invite, you pay.

  • Return all of your calls and reply to your e-mails. Too often people miss so many opportunities, simply because they never got back to the person who initiated the dialogue.

  • Frequency is good. People need to hear from you more often than not.

  • Don't be a pest. Don't stalk someone down to the point that they don't want to deal with you.

  • Be persistent. "Persistence is a virtue". Being a pest is a fine line. If you have the right opportunity, your client or contact will appreciate your persistency.

  • Don't be passive aggressive. Review all opportunities and reply in a timely fashion. Word gets around and people do talk and that is a reputation that is hard to shake.

  • Don't text while driving. It's rampant and people are dying on the roads. Your messages aren't that important.

  • It's okay to let some opportunities go if you did your part and the other person never got back to you. Not everyone is responsible as you might be when it comes to new opportunities.

  • Dont' get too big for your britches. Success breeds success, but we are never too big to be inconsiderate to others. Be a champion in business and you will inspire others to do the same.

  • Learn to love and forgive. That is a great business practice that will never change.
