"Machete" Premiere - Austin, Texas
I have had a chance to review the feature two other times since the premiere. I liken it to "Eating a bag of Skittles at one time. You know it isn't good for you, but you can't help it. It was that good."
The reviews are all over the board from ecstatic to disappointed (you can't make everybody happy). Cinema lovers and afficionados will laud the feature for its plausible plots, timeliness of the subject matter (although by accident - the film has been in the making for over 16 years), music, and a male-focused action-driven story line. Not being sexist here, but my wife has normally refused to see films like this with me, until now.
"Machete gets the girls" too! For the most part, my guess is that the ladies will want to see what all the fuss is about. The film features Lindsay Lohan, Jessica Alba, Michelle Rodriguez, and lots more. So, is it a guy flick or a chick flick?
My wife and I, have a date this afternoon to catch a matinee in Houston, Texas. She couldn't resist my description of the premiere and the film thus far. So, she is throwing caution to the wind and entering into theatre to experience a "film for the history books". This is a film you want to see in the theatre, watching it on DVD won't be the same.
I was suprised to see that Danny Trejo, Michelle Rodriguez, Electra Avellan, Jeff Fahey attend the premier. The film opened in Venice, Italy the night before. Of course the Director Robert Rodriguez and Co-writer, Alvaro Rodriguez along with other cast and crew were at the premiere signing autographs and mingling with the fans of Trouble Makers Studios and the actors.
There is some controversy over the film and the jury is out as to whether it will qualify for the Texas Film Commission tax rebate. I think it should, this film could only be made in Texas.

"The Heart of Texas" Movie Climbing the Charts

What a heart-elevating movie. Meaning, this beautifully shot story will take your emotions to new heights and places you never thought possible. My family and I were blessed to watch this story of forgiveness, loss, and healing last night and it will leave a lasting impact on how we view each other and others. It raises many questions of how we handle forgiveness and truly love the people we know.
Just got an e-mail from Blake Pilgreen, one of the producers, and he alerted me that the film is now at #3 on the Christian Charts. Mr. Dan Patrick, Executive Producer, has done a wonderful work in backing this story and sharing it with the world. I think he has a heart, bigger than Texas. True to his nature, he wrote back to me on Facebook "I am more blessed than I deserve."
This is a must see movie, regardless of your faith.

FIREPROOF BLAZES DVD SALES RECORDS
From our friends at Lovell-Fairchild Communications.
Number One CBA-Soundscan Video . . . Ever
NASHVILLE—Feb. 5, 2009—FIREPROOF debuted on DVD on Tuesday, January 27, and by week’s end sales in Christian bookstores alone had broken the previous DVD sales record from 2004 set by Jonah, A VeggieTales Movie.
With this achievement, Sherwood Pictures—the production arm of Sherwood Church in Albany GA—holds three of the top five spots on the Christian DVD chart: Facing the Giants is no. 2; Flywheel is no. 5.
FIREPROOF opened in 839 theaters at no. 4 in the nation and was the number one independent film in theatrical release in 2008 as well as one of the top highest-grossing Christian films—along with Narnia and Amazing Grace—since The Passion of Christ.
“These record-setting sales at Christian retail stores, after a highly successful theatrical run, confirms that there is a large audience hungry for content that encourages in these difficult times and feeds the need for products that reflect their faith and lifestyle,” Terry A. Hemmings, president and CEO of Provident Music Group, said. “We’re thankful for our partnership with Sherwood Pictures and Sony Pictures Home Entertainment. It took a tremendous effort from everyone involved to achieve these unprecedented numbers.”
Bob Rubin, executive vice president for Sony Pictures Home Entertainment, which distributed the DVD at mass-market retail, said, "We are thrilled with the response both at Christian retail and mass-market retailers. This strong sales performance is especially impressive in light of today's economic climate and clearly indicates a broad market for faith-based entertainment. We are delighted that FIREPROOF resonates so well with its audience."
FIREPROOF, marketed by Provident Films and Sony Pictures Home Entertainment’s Affirm Films, is the story of a fireman, Caleb Holt (Kirk Cameron), who can save strangers but not his own marriage. The Love Dare, a book/plot device in the movie, also a book by Stephen and Alex Kendrick, topped the New York Times Advice Paperback list for 14 weeks at nos. 1 or 2. After 18 weeks, it still ranks no. 5.
Now in time for Valentine’s Day and National Marriage Month, Christian bookstores across the nation are selling the exclusive Christian retail version of the FIREPROOF DVD—The Special Collector’s Edition— which contains all the bonus material sold outside the Christian market plus 32 minutes of CBA-only material: a movie-production video blog, bringing behind-the-scenes to life; “Fun with Mr. Rudolph” (film fans know Caleb Holt’s next door neighbor); additional firehouse commentary from Wayne (Caleb’s fellow fire fighter), and the Casting Crowns video of the movie’s hit song, Slow Fade.
Churches, therapists, Sunday school groups, and organizations already are purchasing site licenses for group showings of the movie famous for myriad reports of marriages strengthened and couples reunited after taking in the movie’s message.
FIREPROOF is the third movie from Sherwood Pictures, headed by Sherwood Church Senior Pastor Michael Catt, Executive Pastor Jim McBride, and Ministers Alex Kendrick and Stephen Kendrick. Sherwood’s first film, Flywheel, in 2004, has sold 200,000-plus DVDs. Its second, Facing the Giants, in 2006, earned $10.1 million at the box office and has sold more than 1.6 million DVDs in 58 countries (14 languages).
Written by brothers Alex (director) and Stephen Kendrick (producer), and with a 1,200-member cast and crew, FIREPROOF stars an all-volunteer cast of almost all first-time actors.
FIREPROOF is dubbed in Spanish and has subtitles in English, French, Spanish, Chinese, Portuguese, Chinese, Russian, Korean, and Arabic. The movie’s total running time is 1 hour and 58 minutes.

Movie Update: Samuel Goldwyn Films' 'Fireproof' Crosses $20M Mark in Less Than Four Weeks

NEW YORK, NY, October 21, 2008: Samuel Goldwyn Films’ FIREPROOF starring Kirk Cameron continued its incredibly successful run having crossed the $20 million dollar mark less than four weeks in release. After opening #4 in the country on Sept. 26 with a per screen average of $8,111 making it the highest opening weekend box office (non 3D HANNAH MONTANA) of the year for films released on 1,000 screens or fewer, the film remained in the top 10 for three consecutive weeks while competing against films released on more than double the number of screens.
FIREPROOF marks the second successful theatrical release in the ongoing collaboration between Sherwood Pictures, Provident Films, Samuel Goldwyn Films, and Affirm Films. The first joint venture was FACING THE GIANTS, which went on to gross north of $10 million.
Currently on 905 screens, the film grossed $2,578,271 this weekend—declining only 18 percent—for a cume to date of $20,628,110.
FIREPROOF was written by Sherwood’s Alex and Stephen Kendrick and directed by the former. The film stars Cameron and newcomer Erin Bethea in a story about a firefighter who must learn how to rescue his own marriage.
On both FACING THE GIANTS and FIREPROOF, Sherwood, Provident Films, Samuel Goldwyn Films, and Affirm Films worked together to devise and execute a marketing strategy to blend traditional theatrical marketing with an aggressive grassroots and faith-based outreach. Provident held screenings across the country and provided resources and materials for pastors and churches to spread the word about the film. Through its vast network and databases, Provident created opportunities for them to bring the film to their respective areas and generate excitement within their communities.
Communities across the U.S. are using the film as a tool to support local firefighters, police, and other first responders’ groups with divorce rates up to 90 percent. As churches, individuals, and groups send first responders and their spouses for a night at the movies, volunteer babysitting brigades are freeing up couples to go. Parents are buying tickets for their married children. Churches are buying for members and using the movie to kick off marriage courses.
Said Meyer Gottlieb, president of Samuel Goldwyn Films: “We are thrilled with FIREPROOF’S astonishing reception and grateful that audiences all over America are raving about this entertaining and inspirational film."
According to Bob Rubin, executive vice president of Sony Pictures Home Entertainment, one of the acquisition partners for the film, and which oversees Affirm Films: “Affirm is delighted to have once again partnered with Sherwood Pictures, Provident Films, and Samuel Goldwyn Films in achieving another outstanding box office success in FIREPROOF. The performance of this film obviously reflects the need for this kind of inspiring entertainment among a large audience and Affirm is committed to continuing to make such content available to this community in the future."
"FIREPROOF's inspiring love story has captured the heart of America. People leave theaters passionate about sharing the hope and inspiration of FIREPROOF with family, friends, and everyone they know!” said Terry A. Hemmings, president & CEO, Provident Music Group.
Alex Kendrick goes on to say: “Calls, letters and emails are pouring into Sherwood Pictures to tell us how FIREPROOF has inspired them to pursue covenant in their own marriages. We know we have a lot of growing to do as filmmakers, but we will always look for the ‘God’ idea that inspires and motivates people.”
A book entitled The Love Dare (www.lovedarebook.com), originally a plot device in the film until audiences repeatedly requested copies for themselves, is #1 on THE NEW YORK TIMES PAPERBACK ADVICE BEST SELLER’S LIST for the second week in a row. Written by the Kendrick brothers, The Love Dare is currently #9 on Amazon.com and in its seventh printing.
Goldwyn plans to expand the release of the film over the upcoming weeks to more than 1,000 screens.
