Marketing for Bright People and Truth Tellers

By Andy Valadez, StealthMarketer

In a world of dummies and liars, it pays to be bright. A bright person in my book is someone who knows that they need the right advisors/friends/counsel/family member(s) and a team around them to succeed. In a world of competing forces, the truth tellers have a better chance of winning (character in brands does matter). Truth in advertising is a great marketing principle (still a best practice).

The truth is that you could have the greatest product or service, but if the right people don't know about it, in they way they need to know about it, it could fail against a better marketed inferior option.

"It pays to win." - U.S. Navy Seals Motto

There is a lot of chatter in markets about what business owners are demanding from their advertising budgets and that is the problem. Most business people are looking at advertising not marketing (Bright Hint: Take time to learn more about the difference between advertising and marketing, they are not the same).
It is time for enterpreneurs to change their focus from advertising to marketing and get their truth to consumers who need to hear it, see it, taste it and live it. Many business owners and sales managers are adopting much of the web to expand their advertising to increase sales. Although this is good, it is still focused on advertising versus marketing. Sure, many of the providers use terms like "targeted", "demographics", "cost per acquistion", "reporting", "ROI", "position", "content", etc. This isn't new. Marketers have long evaluated their success based on the total comprehensive strategy and media mix to drive their well-thought positioining strategy.

The problem many companies are facing today is that there are very few marketers. Like black belts in martial arts, their are numerous practicitioners, but very few senseis or kanchos or mix martial art champions. Anyone can call themselves a marketer, but the truth is, not everyone is a marketer (they know enough to be dangerous to their client).

There are many specialists in the marketplace; however, they may not be marketers per se. For example, you may have an incredible web company or cutting-edge 20-something programmer leading your on-line marketing efforts while missing new opportunities. Short-term success is not a bad thing, but it can still cost you in the long-run to a better marketed company you may never even see hit your company like a round-house kick to the temple.

Marketers on the other hand are thinking about shifts in consumer demand, political and economic changes, competitor initiatives, distribution stategy and tactics, pricing changes, promotion and sales strategy, public relations, innovation, messages to key buyers, market research and "the mix" of traditional media that should still drive your brand positioning in all spectrums. The truth is that marketing is more important than ever.

The Wild World of Ideas and Start-ups

Wow! Where do the weeks go? We are living in truly remarkable times. It is amazing to me that there are so many people caught up with the "misinformation" that permeates the air waves and "blogosphere". For example, "global warming", I don't believe in it and trying to dialogue with someone caught up in the hysteria is unnerving. These are the people who fume with emotion when facing the facts that number in magnitude too difficult to ignore. For example, "true scientists" don't believe it (and they come under persecution for saying so), the sun volatility is something that we can't control and is responsible for the heat everyone is afraid of, and volcanoes emit more noxious gases than we ever could. The facts are that man can't have the type of impact the "worry warts" have placed on it, and nature itself is so immensley powerful that we put ourselves in too high a place for this, and "group think" permeates this group of "World Opinion". "World opinion" carries no weight with me, it has been wrong through out history and cost many millions their lives.

Let's change subject, now that I have stirred the pot little. I think Marketers need to challenge these "nay sayers" at every turn and we welcome your input. Another quick example. As a Former Marine, I believe the battle for America is at stake. I support the war on terror and pray for a "Patton" for our time to rise up and take leadership over this war. A friend of mine was killed in the '83 barracks bombing in Beirut, Lebanon and I am finally encouraged to see our nation strike back at the radical muslim culture that created the "suicide bombers" in the first place.

Now, can we agree that Marketing is warfare. These two examples are on tops of just about "everyone's mind". I guess I could bring in immigration and I do believe we need to protect our borders, but I won't.

So now, in the "Wild World of Ideas" I am finding that the warrior mindset has helped me to break through barriers and challenge the "middle of the road" brain clog that permeates our culture. I am a doer. That has created a funnel of opportunities for me and mine. My founders met this week, to agree that we have the opportunity to change Marketing for the better and we are excited about what the future has in store. I personally am not afraid of global warming, the talk of war, the fear overpopulation, or failure. For many of us, I believe we are living in times of break-throughs. It is past time to claim yours! Make history, be the one making it and don't let the media (news will always be bad) or anyone else stop you from your progress. Remember, when everyone thinks a certain way, it is usually time to change and go the other way. If you are an idea person, you will understand this. God's speed. Get caught up in THE VORTEX!

My Whirlwind Trip to "The OC", Disney, Beverly Hills, and Hollywood

Wow! Just got back from a working vacation in beautiful Southern California. My clients and friends Leesa and Denny Bellesi, authors of "The Kingdom Assignment", honored my wife and I with a "WELL DONE AWARD" at the first annual awards night recognizing 30 other recipients (read more about the event at the links above).

We turned this opportunity into a vacation with our two young girls, Kayla and Kenna, and spent a relaxing but fast-paced week on Balboa Island (south of LA). Had a chance to do my very first YouTube diary from Sunset Boulevard in Hollywood and a podcast that I will post later. Spent some quality time with a new author and movie client at the posh Grand Havana Room in Beverly Hills (members only).

Had a chance to meet and see a few stars; but basically, I enjoyed that my wife and family had a chance to meet some of the people we see on TV and in theatres, hear on the radio, read about, and watch on DVD at home (i.e., Chris Gardner the subject of the movie "Pursuit of Happyness", Mark Clayman, Executive Producer for the movie "Pursuit of Happyness", Mario Bernheim, one of the original founders of HBO "Comic Relief", American Idol stars Katharine McPhee and Chris Sligh, gospel singer Bebe Winans, actress Lin Ciangio, and of course Mickey Mouse, etc.).

My wife usually shuns the limelight, but I had to take a few pictures for her to prove to her co-workers that she really did meet some of these people, etc. My young girls fit in well on the scene, asking more about Kahtarine McPhee's puppy and going for their personal glam shots at their private tea party on the island and a chance to take a "kewl" photo with their favorite star Mickey! Storm Alert! The Kingdom Assignment "Well Done Awards" Celebration

Wow! This is going to be a great event. Have you heard of "The Kingdom Assignment"? Denny and Leesa Bellesi, co-authors of the series, have launched a movement that will take the nation by storm. The Kingdom Assignment has been featured on Oprah, in People Magazine, the Hallmark Channel and talked about on radio shows and written about in newspapers across the country and around the world.

The authors have teamed up with their readers, friends, and network of supporters to celebrate how God has used this book series to open the minds, hearts, and those who have accepted their individual roles in participation of "The Kingdom Assignment".

This awards evening has many surprises planned for its honorees and award recipients. "Chris Gardner" the subject of "Pursuit of Happyness", American Idol star "Katherine McPhee" and legendary gospel singer "Bebe Winans" and others will entertain the audience.

We will be posting an interview podcast with Leesa Bellesi, next week (your assignment is to come back and listen). The interview will reveal more detail about what "The Kingdom Assignment" is all about. The "Well Done Awards" are being held at Coast Hills Church in Aliso Viejo, CA on May 30th.
