It's A YouTube World, Use it to Your Advantage

YouTube has so many uses from a marketing perspective. In essence, one can create their own media network. I shot this video with my friend Steve Levine, publisher of Real Estate Executive magazine that only goes out to the top 3,100 Realtors(r) in the Houston market. Many of Mr. Levine's clients want to be interviewed now.

Mr. Levine was gracious enough to interview my client Noel Halgreen, President of Sona Medspa Houston (www.sonahouston.com) for Mr. Levine's blog (www.stevelevinemedia.com). Be sure to read the terms and conditions of YouTube to tailor its use with your marketing objectives. Go to "Category FIVE" to see other videos. Get caught up in the VORTEX!

The Dove Award: School of Redemption - The Movie

Wow! Our client T4 Pictures just received 5 Dove Award Seals (the highest award given) for the script "School of Redemption". They also said it was the best script they had ever read in the family genre! You can read the strong review here: Dove Award

This seal recognition will open a lot of doors for the movie makers as it will increase the chances for distribution, sourcing an investor, product placement deals, and attracting name actors. This, at a time when theatre owners are looking for family movies, because of traffic turnout. The business plan identified that there was a huge opportunity to make a family movie that crosses generations.

The script had to be great and afford product placement opportunities as well. So now, they have a great script, a great genre, at a great time! Final piece to the recipe? A great movie. That will be easy given the talent behind the company. Calling all distributors! Get caught up in the VORTEX!

Marketing in the Movies, the Red Carpet Please

Marketers should explore all avenues when it comes to marketing their product or service. One innovative way is movies. Yes movies. Your city probably has an independent film association that you can build a relationship with. As part of the review, check out the writer, the director, the script, and review the business and marketing plan to see how your product is going to be positioned. Keep in mind, family movies are doing better at the box office, so look for rated G or PG films. You don't want a problem with how your product or service is perceived in the market. With the success of family movies, you will also expand your visibility. It doesn't hurt to have your product in several movies either - keep track of the movie releases.

If you are lucky, you can find an emerging script writer and have your product or service written into the movie. For a nominal contribution, you could gain market presence when the movie becomes a success. You could even sell your product from the movie website while it is in production or being seen in theatres.

If you are a movie maker, then the same approach holds true for getting advertising dollars and negotiated support for your movie. You want as many people helping to market your movie when it is ready for distribution and most firms would be happy to do that, if you ask them. Rememb
er to think big and go after the big names to support your movie. See you at the movies!

The Starbucks Experience: Use All Five Senses When Marketing

It is a fun brave new world! I did my first Podcast yesterday from Starbucks, Galleria Houston. You can listen below.

Now, I have been interviewed on the radio and those interviews have been podcasted before, but this was my first one by myself. I got to write it, think of where I wanted to do it, and broadcast from a cool location wirelessly. When I ordered my "Venti Carmel Machiato" well- stirred, I was holding their new book "The Starbucks Expreience: 5 Principles for Turning Ordinary into Extraordinary", which I picked up from Border's book store a month ago. The barrista was curious about the book and I told her I was anxious to read it and that I would be doing a Podcast from the location (so technically, I got permission to do it). Anyway, I think it came out pretty good. Tell me what you think?

In the Eye of the Storm and Storm Chasing

I advise marketers and business professionals to balance their lives. It is easy to get so consumed with business opportunities and miss your life. I am all about the passion of the pursuit, but learned what matters most is my family and friends. I have been blessed to be married to my wife, Tina, of 19 years and to be the father of two beautiful young girls Kayla (6) and Kenna (3). My wife and I dated for 7 years before we got married and enjoyed our adventure for 13 more years after we got married. It has been a wonderful journey and kids add greatly to that dynamic.

Now, we are refocusing on our love for each other (I know its mushy). I have been very intentional about leveraging all of my marketing activities, but I am learning very quickly that I cannot let that interfere with my personal goals of family, personal development, and physical fitnesss. Areas that will always require maintainence. Now, I write this from experience. I once got up caught in the success of one my key clients, making him extreme income and growing his company. I started to overlook everything that was important to me. Fortunately, I wised up and my wife was willing to forgive me for my error in judgment. I wrote this as a caution, when you are chasing the storm, it is better to be in the eye storm - safe from its ravages! Get caught up in the VORTEX, but stay in the center of the storm. Happy marketing!

The Warrior Marketer

Politics, war, and marketing share similar comparisons - a battle for the mind. The stakes are high. I am finishing "On Combat," written by Lt. Col. Dave Grossman, what an amazing man of our time. He trains our military and law enforcement elite and advises martial artists and others on the preparation for the "Universal Phobia of Interpersonal Aggression." This fear stems back from our time in the wild, where man had to be on alert for an attack by animal or foe. In a civilized society, the fear is always present and globally, interpersonal conflict is rising. He says the "military now looks like the police and the police looks like the military." He cites, we are relatively safe in America despite the displays on the nightly news. Most aggression is repeated by the same group of people, they are the wolves in our society.

The book depicts what happens before, during and after combat in order to create a "bullet proof mind" for society's protector warrior class. According to Lt. Col. Grossman, for the sake of simplicity, there are three types of classes - the sheep, the sheep dog, and the wolf. The sheep dog lives to protect the sheep and will give his life protecting them. The sheep are uneasy with the sheep dog, because he looks like the wolf. Never the less, the sheep need the sheep dog. The sheep dog also lives to confront the wolf.

Psychographics plays a crital role in marketing (i.e., fear, greed, safety, etc.). Marketers recognize that human beings are attracted to brands that solve these deep seeded needs. As an avid reader on military history, politics, and martial arts, I can see the many comparisons in marketing. For example, Marlboro cigarettes were once a low-selling, female brand many decades ago. When marketers began to position this cigarette with the cowboy on the open range ("The Marlboro Man" was born), cigarette sales sky-rocketed and human behavior was changed. Now, I am not anti-tobacco, I love a great cigar. I also believe that as long as the product is not illegal, people should have their right to smoke - the price of having a free society and the right to make wrong choices. However, being a realist, one has to look at the destruction that cigarette smoking has left. Marketing is as powerful as war. I don't know the death toll caused from inhaling the 4,000 dangerous chemicals, but we all know it is high. I do believe that education plays a vital role until the law is changed or people decide they don't want to smoke.

As a marketer and warrior ( I served in the Marines from 88 to 92 and still continue to hone my warrior skills), there are many things I won't market. For the purposes of this blog, it is good enough that the reader know that marketing is a weapon, use it wisely. Get caught up in The Vortex!

p.s. The photo above was taken on the range with a group of guys from my church. We had a blast (pardon the pun). One of the young men, an Eagle Scout, got to fire-off 40 rounds from my Ruger mini-14. He later joined the Marines and joined an elite force within the Corps.

It's My City!

Marketers need to have an attitude about what they do. We are the visionaries that communicate great brands and help our clients make millions, billions! So, if you are going to market, think big. Walk confidentally, communicate well and be clearly understood. I motivated my team recently by declaring that it is our city (any city we are marketing in). With that thought, we are all thinking big and working aggressively to seize opportunities. Hope you get caught up in the VORTEX!
