Advertising Campaigns That Have Failed

Do you know of any hailed campaigns that everyone seems to think are "great", but have actually failed in the market? If so, please send me your pick with the details to info@marketingdynamics.org or post on The VORTEX (live).

For example, the ever popular 2000 Budweiser showing four African American guys answering the phone with "Whassup?" had everyone around the world going "Whassuuup?" (and some still are). The campaign actually did not increase sales for Budweiser as documented by Sergio Zyman in his book "The End of Advertising As We Know It" (see book link below).

"The campaign won just about every award in 2000, including the 2000 Grand Prix Cannes Lionnes, the 2000 Grand Clio, and the 2000 Grand Award: Best Commercial New York Festival at the Television and Cinema Advertising Awards. But while the ad execs were on stage, Budweiser's market share dropped 1.5 to 2.5 percentage points and sales in barrells fell by 8.3 percent - the largest share loss by Budweiser since 1994 and by far the largest drop in sales over the same period."

Category 5: The Venture Makers

We went on the "Houston Manufacturer's" TV show "Movers and Shakers" segment to talk about "Houston's Neighborhoods" a joint venture of Houston Media Group and my business partner Steve Levine, Steve Levine Real Estate Media. The program will be an interesting platform for home buyers in the Houston market.

Leadership Summit 2007 - Lead Where You Are

Wow! Just completed 3 days of intense leadership re-calibration at The Fellowship of The Woodlands, "Leadership Summit 2007". This was my second year to attend and I encourage others to seek it out and put it on your schedule for next year 8/7 thur 8/9 2008 (see http://www.willowcreek.com/ for more details on 2008).

The summit is satellite broadcasted all over the world, with over 100,000 leaders attending this year. We heard from Carly Fiorina, Former HP CEO, Floyd Flake, Marcus Buckingham, Michael Porter, PhD, Harvard Strategy Professor, Colin Powell, Former Secretary of State, John Ortberg, Filmmaker Richard Curtis (who has raised over $1B to help the poor and dying in Africa), Jimmy Carter (not my favorite past President, but interesting man to learn from), and of course, Bill Hybels.

I get inspired everytime I go, to do greater things. Our "little missions" when compared to the greater things going on around us, pale in comparison to what others have done and are doing to make life better for the desperately hopeless. Leadership is a gift and a higher calling. I am looking forward to the drastic changes I am making in my business, life, and focus for the rest of the year. The most dangerous prayer one can make, is "Lord use me!" Lead where you are. Get caught up in THE VORTEX.

The Wild World of Ideas and Start-ups

Wow! Where do the weeks go? We are living in truly remarkable times. It is amazing to me that there are so many people caught up with the "misinformation" that permeates the air waves and "blogosphere". For example, "global warming", I don't believe in it and trying to dialogue with someone caught up in the hysteria is unnerving. These are the people who fume with emotion when facing the facts that number in magnitude too difficult to ignore. For example, "true scientists" don't believe it (and they come under persecution for saying so), the sun volatility is something that we can't control and is responsible for the heat everyone is afraid of, and volcanoes emit more noxious gases than we ever could. The facts are that man can't have the type of impact the "worry warts" have placed on it, and nature itself is so immensley powerful that we put ourselves in too high a place for this, and "group think" permeates this group of "World Opinion". "World opinion" carries no weight with me, it has been wrong through out history and cost many millions their lives.

Let's change subject, now that I have stirred the pot little. I think Marketers need to challenge these "nay sayers" at every turn and we welcome your input. Another quick example. As a Former Marine, I believe the battle for America is at stake. I support the war on terror and pray for a "Patton" for our time to rise up and take leadership over this war. A friend of mine was killed in the '83 barracks bombing in Beirut, Lebanon and I am finally encouraged to see our nation strike back at the radical muslim culture that created the "suicide bombers" in the first place.

Now, can we agree that Marketing is warfare. These two examples are on tops of just about "everyone's mind". I guess I could bring in immigration and I do believe we need to protect our borders, but I won't.

So now, in the "Wild World of Ideas" I am finding that the warrior mindset has helped me to break through barriers and challenge the "middle of the road" brain clog that permeates our culture. I am a doer. That has created a funnel of opportunities for me and mine. My founders met this week, to agree that we have the opportunity to change Marketing for the better and we are excited about what the future has in store. I personally am not afraid of global warming, the talk of war, the fear overpopulation, or failure. For many of us, I believe we are living in times of break-throughs. It is past time to claim yours! Make history, be the one making it and don't let the media (news will always be bad) or anyone else stop you from your progress. Remember, when everyone thinks a certain way, it is usually time to change and go the other way. If you are an idea person, you will understand this. God's speed. Get caught up in THE VORTEX!

An "Off the Cuff" Interview with Miltonio at The Gingerman

Oddly, I was wearing no cuffs for this interview with musician, Miltonio. The Gingerman (Houston, Texas) has always been a great place to enjoy a fine beer, listen to the jukebox, and hang out with friends. So, I had a chance to catch up with Miltonio as he prepares to release his new CD "Union", now available on iTunes.com. Thank you Cisco Dowdell, for shooting this clip. How do you like the Ferrari, baseball cap? Get caught up in The VORTEX!

"Kathie doesn't shave anymore" - TV Commercial Now Airing

Okay, we had fun with this commercial too! I make a cameo (you only see the back of my head), where Kathie's husband tells everyone that "Kathie" doesn't shave anymore. We are looking at carrying the story on as she and her husband plan to see the kids at college, plan for a weekend getaway, or a film shoot on a 50 foot yacht. Stay tuned and get caught up in THE VORTEX!
